Listen up… Wotif’s ultimate Aussie road trip playlist is here!

We asked, you delivered! We put the call-out to our awesome Facebook and Instagram community for their favourite Aussie songs for a road trip and boy did they come through with the musical goods. And the result? Wotif’s very first travel playlist! From Farnsey to Barnesy, these tunes are sure to fast track you to holiday mode before you even reach your destination.

Sure, my expertise may be more travel than music, but here are five of my faves. Just try and tell me these tracks aren’t proof of some road trip playlist perfection:

1. Bee Gees – Jive Talkin’

Every so often – and specifically when a Bee Gees track slips into an Aussie playlist – I’m happily reminded that these funky chickens and I share citizenship, which is always extremely cool to me. Frankly, you could play any Bee Gees track in a moving vehicle and I’ll pull a Hustle as quickly as I’d likely pull a muscle doing it.

2. Crowded House – Don’t Dream It’s Over

Some say Crowded House isn’t truly an Aussie band (born in NZ, made in Melbourne – potato, potahto) but no true blue Aussie ever stayed dried-eyed upon hearing this truly nostalgic track. Also, who hasn’t pressed their head up against a back seat window and thought, ‘it’s all too short!’ while this melancholy ditty was blasting? It’s practically the road trip equivalent of a D&M.

3. Baker Boy – Cool As Hell

It might be harder for us than it is for Baker Boy to actually be cool but if we listen to this song and follow his suggestion, we can definitely catch his vibe. I consider this the perfect soundtrack to that hand-snake-out-the-window thing we all do when the road trip really kicks up.

4. Choirboys – Run to Paradise

Aside from the obvious road trip tie-in, there’s something about how easily this song dropped into school disco playlists when I was growing up that makes this an enduring personal favourite. Get the windows down, this one’s made for pumping.

5. Powderfinger – My Happiness

It’s the wonky opening riff that fans have described as a ‘warbling magpie’ that really does it for me. Popping this track on feels like coming home, much like that lost CGI slinky that arches its way through suburban streets in the very memorable film clip. (It rode a skateboard! Crazy).
