Frequently Asked Questions about Singapore

What's the deal with chewing gum?

No smoking areas are becoming more and more common, but have you ever encountered a no chewing area? Singapore's chewing gum ban is real, and its origin dates back to the 1980s. Tired of the effort (and cost) of cleaning up the stubborn wads of gum, the Singaporean government imposed a strict ban on its import and sale. These laws have been somewhat relaxed, and gum that is deemed to have a medicinal benefit is now allowed to be bought and sold within the country. We certainly suggest you dispose of it properly though: Those caught littering the pristine Singaporean streets stand to cop a fine of up to $700!

What language do the locals speak?

A melting pot of cultures, there are many languages spoken within Singapore. No less than 4 languages are all officially recognised national languages, including English, Malay, Chinese Mandarin and Tamil, with English being widely spoken. All official signs are written in English and it has been integrated into the schooling system. You might struggle to converse with some of the more elderly residents, but the younger generation can all speak English to a varying degree.

Is there really an indoor snowfield?

Skiing may not have been on your to-do list in Singapore, but who can resist the allure of an indoor snowfield? Snow City offers a surreal escape from the surrounding cityscape. Step out of the heat and get ready to launch yourself down a three-story-high ski slope! This 60m long run offers plenty of thrills and spills. Travelling with young kids? With snow sculptures and interactive exhibits, there's plenty here to keep the whole family entertained.

What's the best way to pass time in Changi Airport?

The recipient of many awards, Changi Airport is the stuff of legend among regular jet-setters. Its most famed attraction is its tropical butterfly enclosure. Sit back and take a break from the hustle and bustle of Terminal 3 as you admire the fluttering wings of over a thousand butterflies. If you need to wash away the jet lag, head to the rooftop of Terminal 1. Here you'll find one of the world's only airport open-air swimming pools! Complete with hot tubs and plenty of places to rest your travel-worn body, you'll be feeling back to normal in no time. All you need to cap off this unusually pleasant airport experience is a couple of drinks - luckily, you won't have far to go. The Cactus Garden and Bar certainly lives up to its name. Wander over from your poolside lounger and enjoy some cool refreshments among your spiky new friends.
